Ever used a grounding technique? Grounding techniques are ways to calm anxiety and flashbacks. They help you to refocus by concentrating on the reality of the present moment.

One favorite grounding technique is called the 5-4-3-2-1 technique. It uses each of your senses to take in details of your surroundings, even the smallest of details.

Practicing grounding will help you to get better at it over time. So let’s take a deep breath, and give it a try.

Name 5 things you can see.

Name 4 things you can feel.

Name 3 things you can hear.

Name 2 things you can smell.

Name 1 thing you can taste.

Don’t rush through the list. Take time to consciously pay attention to your surroundings. Notice the things that your mind would usually ignore such as distant sounds and faint smells. Pay attention to the things you feel, name the textures and sensation. Pop a piece of candy in your mouth and be aware of the taste.
